Comparison of turbulence models and CFD solution options for a plain pipe
(E D P SCIENCES, 2018) Canli, Eyub; Ates, Ali; Bilir, Sefik
Present paper is partly a declaration of state of a currently ongoing PhD work about turbulent flow in a thick walled pipe in order to analyze conjugate heat transfer. An ongoing effort on CFD investigation of this problem using cylindrical coordinates and dimensionless governing equations is identified alongside a literature review. The mentioned PhD work will be conducted using an in-house developed code. However it needs preliminary evaluation by means of commercial codes available in the field. Accordingly ANSYS CFD was utilized in order to evaluate mesh structure needs and asses the turbulence models and solution options in terms of computational power versus difference signification. Present work contains a literature survey, an arrangement of governing equations of the PhD work, CFD essentials of the preliminary analysis and findings about the mesh structure and solution options. Mesh element number was changed between 5,000 and 320,000. k-epsilon, k-omega, Spalart-Allmaras and Viscous-Laminar models were compared. Reynolds number was changed between 1,000 and 50,000. As it may be expected due to the literature, k-epsilon yields more favorable results near the pipe axis and k-. yields more convenient results near the wall. However k-epsilon is found sufficient to give turbulent structures for a conjugate heat transfer problem in a thick walled plain pipe.

Conjugate heat transfer for turbulent flow in a thick walled plain pipe
(E D P SCIENCES, 2018) Canli, Eyub; Ates, Ali; Bilir, Sefik
Laminar and turbulent flow have their own characteristics in respect of heat transfer in pipes. While conjugate heat transfer is a major concern for a thick walled pipe with laminar flow inside it, there are limited studies about a turbulent flow in a thick walled plain pipe considering the conjugate heat transfer. In order to conduct such a work by means of in-house developed code, it was desired to make a preliminary investigation with commercially available CFD codes. ANSYS CFD was selected as the tool since it has a positive reputation in the literature for reliability. Defined heat transfer problem was solved with SIMPLE and Coupled Schemes for pressure velocity coupling and results are presented accordingly.

Regression Modeling of Surface Roughness in Grinding
(TRANS TECH PUBLICATIONS LTD, 2011) Asilturk, Ilhan; Celik, Levent; Canli, Eyub; Onal, Gurol
Grinding is a widely used manufacturing method in state of art industry. By realizing needs of manufacturers, grinding parameters must be carefully selected in order to maintain an optimum point for sustainable process. Surface roughness is generally accepted as an important indicator for grinding parameters. In this study, effects of grinding parameters to surface roughness were experimentally and statistically investigated. A complete factorial experimental flow was designed for three level and three variable. 62 HRC AISI 8620 cementation steel was used in grinding process with 95-96% Al2O3 grinding wheel. Surface roughness values (Ra, Rz) were measured at the end of process by using depth of cut, feed rate and workpiece speed as input parameters. Experimental results were used for modeling surface roughness values with linear, quadric and logarithmic regressions by the help of MINITAB 14 and SPSS 16 software. The best results according to comparison of models considering determination coefficient were achieved with quadric regression model (84.6% for Ra and 89% for Rz). As a result, a reliable model was developed in grinding process which is a highly complex machining operation and depth of cut was determined as the most effective parameter on grinding by variance analysis (ANOVA). Obtained theoretical and practical acquisitions can be used in various areas of manufacturing sector in the future.

Technical and economic assessment of liquid petroleum gas modification/conversion on a gasoline engine in Turkey for time interval between 2016-2020
    (Selçuk Üniversitesi, 2021) Canli, Eyub
A 1.2-liter gasoline spark ignition internal combustion engine of a Renault Symbol sedan vehicle was adapted to Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) fuel system in 2016. The LPG system utilizes LPG and gasoline fuels according to the operational needs. After modification, fuel consumption of the engine, fuel prices per liter, travelled distance in kilometers, dates and some additional data were recorded till November 2020. Collected data is processed for derivation of performance and economy indicators. Literature and web have been reviewed in order to find related works. Providing a solid application example of LPG conversion is aimed in this work. Also, a snapshot of fuel prices between 2016 and 2020 is being presented by graphical resolution. Approximately 12 to 15 times of initial investment cost has been returned till November 2020 by the LPG system. Also, slightly less CO2, i.e., 6%, has been emitted by means of the utilization of the system. Time resolution of the data is provided by graphics and integral data is also given. LPG conversion is found beneficial in terms of fuel cost. Also, viewed four years period does not reveal any performance problems in terms of energy spending per kilometer. However, engine additional amortization due to LPG system is not considered and this should be kept in mind.
