Öğe Measurement of the distance and angle between the aorta and superior mesenteric artery and correlation to body-mass index in adolescents(CUKUROVA UNIV, FAC MEDICINE, 2018) Ozturk, Mehmet; Caliskan, Emine; Menzilcioglu, Mehmet Sait; Citil, SerdalPurpose: The aim of this study was to identify the variations in the angle and distance values between the superior mesenteric artery and abdominal aorta with body mass index in healthy adolescents. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included a total of 246 adolescent cases; 121 girls and 125 boys. The aorta-mesenteric angle and distance measurements were completed on contrast abdominal computed tomography axial and reformatted sagittal images. Body mass index (kg/m(2)) was calculated. Results: Mean age was 162.8 and 163.8 months for girls and boys, respectively, with no difference identified. Mean body mass index values for girls and boys were 17.8 and 18.6 respectively, with no significant difference identified. The superior mesenteric artery angle, duodenal and left renal vein distance values were 41.1 degrees, 11.2 mm, and 8.2 mm for girls and 42.7 degrees, 12.6 mm and 9.2 mm for boys with no variation identified according to gender. In both genders and in all cases there was a positive correlation between body mass index with superior mesenteric artery angle, duodenal and left renal vein distances. Conclusion: In the healthy adolescent population, the aorta-mesenteric angle and distance measurements show positive correlation with body mass index. The values determined may be used as reference values for diagnosis of compression syndromes related to the mesenteric artery.
