    Aesthetic differences between freshmen and Pre-architects

    This paper demonstrates how architectural representations can be used to identify both differences and commonalities in the way first-year architecture students - as freshmen - and fourth-year architecture students - as pre-architects - perceive the discipline of architecture. It is believed that, depending on the subjects' level of learning, the meaning given to architectural appearances can differ. Using multiple sorting techniques, respondents were asked to sort 21 examples of contemporary architecture according to their own criteria. The multi-dimensional scaling analysis has shown that both the freshmen and the pre-architects were homogeneous in their thinking, showing high inter-individual agreement within the group. However, some individuals in the freshman group were closer to those of pre-architects than other freshmen. By indicating the possibility of having students who are more interested than their classmates, the research points out the risk of treating first year students as strictly unknowledgeable laypersons.

    Performance evaluation of the grid-based FastSLAM in V-REP using MATLAB

    This paper presents a Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) application that is developed in V-REP robot simulation program by using Grid-Based FastSLAM method. In this work, the SLAM problem in an unknown indoor environment is solved with the Pioneer 3 DX mobile robot equipped with a laser range finder. Control scripts are developed in the Lua and FastSLAM scripts using MATLAB that is linked to the simulation platform by means of the Remote API feature of the V-REP. In order to evaluate of the performance of the FastSLAM, a number of tests have been conducted. Effects of the changing of particle numbers, changing in the error due to steep turn, changing of the number of sensor beam, cpu time for the iterations and the map error due to working time are analyzed in detail. © 2018 IEEE.

    Sille settlement in the context of sustainable historical fabric and façade analysis of its traditional houses

    Sille is located 8 km northwest of Konya city center in the Central Anatolia region. It is one of the most important and historically rooted residential units in Anatolia. Although it is located in close proximity to Konya, Sille draws attention as a unique site with its geographical structure, cultural life, beliefs and tradition. In this study, firstly, Sille's historical significance, cultural and social characteristics are addressed with a particular focus on its distinct structure pertaining to its culture, belief, tradition and geography. Then, a typology study is carried out by explaining the city settlement constituting Sille's historical fabric, façade characteristics and elements of Sille traditional houses. In this context, 16 traditional house façades are chosen in line with the infrastructures formed through the literature review on the subject. These house façades are examined and analyzed through the help of visual data. In the light of the data obtained from the results of this analysis, evaluations and suggestions on the preservation of Sille's historical fabric are made. © 2014 Archnet-IJAR, International Journal of Architectural Research.
