Effects of zinc and aprotinin on the healing of ulnar diaphyseal fractures in rabbits
(VETERINARNI A FARMACEUTICKA UNIVERZITA BRNO, 2018) Izci, Celal; Celik, Ilhami; Erol, Muharrem
The effects of zinc and aprotinin on fracture healing in experimentally induced fractures were investigated by means of histometric analyses and alkaline phosphatase histochemistry. Healthy 54 adult New Zealand White female rabbits were separated into three groups as control, zinc, and aprotinin treatment. The control animals did not receive any medicament; zinc sulphate was given orally to the rabbits in the Zn group for 15 days. Aprotinin was postoperatively infiltrated into the fracture area at the 3rd and 24th h following operation. Immobilization of fracture ends of all groups was similar throughout the experiment. The zinc administered group displayed the highest alkaline phosphatase positive cell level through the experiment. By day 30 after the operation, fibrocartilage and osseous tissues reached the highest levels in the zinc treated group. Based on the observation of augmented osseous tissue formation and increased alkaline phosphatase positive osteoblastic cell activity in the callus, it was conluded that Zn sulphate is a potent stimulator of bone formation by increasing mineralization in the fractured bone segments.

Postoperative Analgesic Effects of Carprofen Following Osteotomy and Laparotomy in Dogs
(MEDWELL ONLINE, 2011) Erol, Muharrem; Izci, Celal
This study investigated the effects of postoperative pain following soft and hard tissue operations in dogs on Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone (ACTH) levels, dopamine levels, haemocoel values and blood gases. It also evaluated the results of the applied treatments. The study was carried out in 4 groups each comprising 6 dogs. Dogs in the 1st and 3rd groups underwent laparotomy and those in the 2nd and 4th groups underwent osteotomy. Carprofen (4.4 mg kg(-1)) (Rimadyl, Pfizer) was administered subcutaneously as an analgesic to the dogs in the 1st and 2nd groups following the operation. Venous blood samples were collected from the animals before the operation and in the subsequent hours to determine the ACTH and dopamine levels. In the postoperative period, ACTH and dopamine levels were significantly higher in the groups that underwent osteotomy than in the groups that underwent laparotomy (p<0.05). Statistically significant decreases were observed in the groups that received analgesia after the 2nd h (p<0.05). In this study, effective postoperative analgesia is required after both soft and hard tissue operations. Furthermore, effective and rapid implementation of the process is important for postoperative animal welfare and rapid return to normal physiological functions.

A study about determining the changes in the structural characteristics of the digital cushion in heifer and multipar dairy cows: A preliminary report
(KAFKAS UNIV, VETERINER FAKULTESI DERGISI, 2011) Izci, Celal; Erol, Muharrem; Goksahin, Ebru
Claw horn lesions are crucial problems for dairy cows and causes serious financial losses. The changes in the structure of digital cushion are considered to be the trigger for such lesions. The purpose of this study is to determine these changes in heifer and multipar dairy cows. The structural changes in the digital cushion were determined by ultrasonography and gas chromatography. As a result, it can be mentioned that thickness of the digital cushion can be measured by ultrasonography and, also digital cushions of heifers have a lower percentage of fat than cows have and a higher rate of saturated fatty acid in their digital cushion. It can be asserted that these changes of digital cushion increase the traumatic effects inside the claw which may cause sole ulcer and white line disease.
