Öğe Intervertebral discitis and epidural abscess formation secondary to repeated epidural injections: A case report(2006) Kalkan E.; Eser O.; Topatan H.I.; Cengiz Ş.L.Objective: In this article our aim was to emphasize the possibility of development of epidural abscess after repeated injections in a patient into the spinal epidural space. Methods: Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed due to worsening of low back pain, inability to walk, fever and sweating. Surgical drainage of the abscess was carried out by bilateral L 5 hemi-partial laminectomy. Antibiotic therapy was recommended for two months and neurological examination was normal after 6 months. Results: Two months after repeated injections, the patient was admitted to our clinic with the complaint of low back pain, inability to walk, fever and fatigue. T 2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) examination of the lumbosacral spine showed spinal epidural abscess at L5-S1 level and concomitant intervertebral discitis. Staphylococcus aureus grew on cultures. Conclusion: The frequent use of invasive procedures into the spinal cord such as epidural injections increases the incidence of abscesses which can cause serious morbidity if recognition of the infectious agent and treatment with appropriate antimicrobial therapy are delayed. © 2006 VSP.Öğe Pineal region tumors of childhood(Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2011) Turgut M.; Ak H.; Kalkan E.Pineal region tumors are not uncommon in childhood, with an incidence of 5 to 10% of all brain neoplasms. Although they vary greatly in histologic type, pineal parenchymal tumors and germ-cell tumors are frequently seen. A pathological diagnosis of tumor type is imperative because the necessity of adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy for the particular tumor types. In clinical practice, however, surgery in this region is still a difficult procedure due to the close vicinity of the deep venous system, the mesencephalon and the diencephalon. In these tumors, surgical intervention is curative in only 20 to 30% of cases; local or craniospinal axis radiotherapy and different chemotherapeutic agents may be required in the remaining ones. Therefore, histological confirmation is vital prior to treatment for appropriate management in children with pineal region tumors. In this chapter, we will review the clinical presentation, treatment, and outcome of the pineal region tumors of childhood. © 2012 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. A 30- year- old male patient was operated for spinal cyst hydatid in our clinic previously. A year after first surgery the patient was readmitted to our clinic with recurrence of spinal cyst hydatid in a different spinal level. In this report we present this uncommon association and discuss the cause of recurrence.Öğe Supratentorial intracerebral haemorrhage following posterior fossa operation [8](2006) Kalkan E.; Eser O.[Abstract not Available]
