Comparative performance of diatom indices in aquatic pollution assessment
(ACADEMIC JOURNALS, 2009) Kalyoncu, Hasan; Çiçek, Nazire Lerzan; Akköz, Cengiz; Yorulmaz, Bülent
The use of epilithic diatoms as indicators of river water quality was evaluated in two streams of south Turkey. Diatoms as well as physical and chemical variables were sampled monthly between May, 2002 and April 2003 at six sites that can represent the streams. A total of 110 diatom taxa belonging to 32 genera were found. The most tolerant taxa to organic pollution were Nitzschia palea (Kutzing) W. Smith., Craticula accomoda (Hustedt) D. G. Mann., Gomphonema parvulum (Kutzing) Kutzing, Navicula atomus (Kutzing) Grunow, Navicula cryptocephala Kutzing. These species were dominant at the organically polluted stations. The performance of three types of benthic diatom index was compared ( Swiss Diatom Index (DI-CH), Trophic Index (TI) and Saprobic Index (SI)). The indices were significantly correlated with dissolved oxygen, chloride, biological oxygen demand (BOD(5)), and concentrations of nutrients (NO(3)-N, NO(2)-N, NH(4)-N, and PO(4)-P). DI-CH, TI and SI had high correlations with the physicochemical variables but DI-CH and TI were more reliable than the SI. We concluded that in these rivers, DI-CH and TI could be more useful than SI. Based on the significant correlation with nutrients and organic pollution variables this study suggests that SI, TI and DI-CH are integrating the effects of organic pollution.

Darıören Deresi ve Isparta Çayı (Isparta) 'nın Epilitik Algleri ve Mevsimsel Dağılımları
(2010) Çiçek, N. Lerzan; Kalyoncu, Hasan; Akköz, Cengiz; Ertan, Ö. Osman
Bu çalışmada, Darıören Deresi ve Isparta Çayı epilitik alglerinin mevsimsel gelişimi seçilen altı istasyondan Mayıs 2002-Nisan 2003 tarihleri arasında aylık olarak alınan örneklerde incelenmiş, Sıcaklık (C), pH, Elektriksel iletkenlik, Çözünmüş Oksijen, Ca2, Mg2, toplam sertlik, CI -, NH _{4-}N, PO _{4-}P, NO _{2-}N, NO _{3-}N, BOD _5 değerleri tespit edilmiştir. Epilitik flora ve tespit edilen türlerin sıklık ve baskınlıkları belirlenmiş, kommünitede Bacillariophyta üyelerinin baskın olduğu görülmüş, Cymbella affinis Kütz., Diatoma vulgare Bory., Gomphonema parvulum var. micropus (Kütz.) Cleve, Meridion circulare Agardh, Navicula accomoda Hustedt, N. atomus (Naeg) Grun., N. gracilis Ehr., Nitzschia palea (Kütz.)

Determination of heavy metals and metals levels in five fish species from Isikli Dam Lake and Karacaoren Dam Lake (Turkey)
(SPRINGER, 2012) Kalyoncu, Leyla; Kalyoncu, Hasan; Arslan, Gulsin
The concentrations of heavy metals and metals (Zn, Pb, Bi, Cd, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Mg, Cu, Cr, Ca, Sr, Na, Li, K) were measured in muscle of five species Cyprinus carpio (from IAYA +/- klA +/- dam), Scardinius erythrophthalmus (from IAYA +/- klA +/- dam), Tinca tinca (from IAYA +/- klA +/- dam), C. carpio (from Karacaoren dam), Carassius carassius (from Karacaoren dam) caught from IAYA +/- klA +/- and Karacaoren. The highest metal was Na (466.95 mu g/g) in C. carassius, while the lowest levels were Fe (0.37 mu g/g) and Cu (0.37 mu g/g) in C. carpio from IAYA +/- klA +/- dam. The mean concentrations mu g/g d.w. some of heavy metals in muscle of C. carpio (from IAYA +/- klA +/- dam), S. erythrophthalmus (from IAYA +/- klA +/- dam), T. tinca (from IAYA +/- klA +/- dam), C. carpio (from Karacaoren dam), C. carassius ( from Karacaoren dam) were as follows: Cd 2.00-2.10-1.95-2.06-2.27, Zn 4.36-2.64-13.13-13.33-24.47, Pb 1.65-1.24-1.90-2.37-2.41, Co 2.46-2.37-2.48-2.58-2.80, Mg 138.51-154.35-218.59-204.58-202.16, Fe 0.37-2.62-3.17-3.01-12.33, respectively.

Epilithic Diatoms From the Dariören Stream (Isparta/ Turkey): Biotic Indices and Multivariate Analysis
(2009) Kalyoncu, Hasan; Çiçek, Lerzan Nezire; Akköz, Cengiz; Özçelik, R.
During May 2002- April 2003, 72 field works were done on 6 sampling points at Dariören stream basin (Isparta/ Turkey). Ecological methodologies (species richness, diversity and saprobic indices, as well as multivariate analysis) were employed to assess the impact of the pollution on epilithic diatom assemblages. Biological oxygen demand, NH4-N, NO 3-N, NO2-N SO4, conductivity, total hardness and turbidity parameters were increased, pH was variable, but dissolved oxygen was decreased at the 5th and 6th sampling points of the stream, which were affected by organic and inorganic pollutants. Changes in water quality levels were better reflected by saprobic index and by principal component analysis than species richness and diversity indices in the Dariören stream.
