Öğe Evaluation of h?D-1 and h?D-2 levels in saliva of patients with oral mucosal diseases(University of the West Indies, 2013) Kucukkolbasi H.; Kucukkolbasi S.; Ayyildiz H.F.; Dursun R.; Kara H.Objective: This study aimed to determine a possible correlation between oral mucosal disease and salivary concentrations of the antimicrobial peptides human beta-defensin-1 (h?D-1) and human betadefensin- 2 (h?D-2). Method: The present work focussed on the establishment of a reversed phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) procedure to quantify human beta-defensins (h?D-1 and h?D-2) in saliva samples of patients with oral diseases such as lichen planus (n = 10), Behçet (n = 10) and recurrent apthous stomatitis (n = 10). Results: Linear calibration range for h?D-1 and h?D-2 defensins was 1.67-200 ?g mL-1 and 3.13 - 100 ?g mL-1 with R2 values of 0.9998 and 0.996, correspondingly. The concentration of beta-defensins in saliva was determined by comparing the peak areas of eluted h?D-1 and h?D-2 with that of their standards. The variation of the amount of beta-defensins was evaluated by comparisons of the results obtained from the patients with oral mucosal diseases before and after treatments and the control subjects. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were found to be 1.62 ?g mL-1 and 5.39 ?g mL-1 for h?D-1 and 0.94 ?g mL-1 and 3.13 ?g mL-1 for h?D-2, respectively. Conclusion: The salivary beta-defensin concentration was significantly higher in patients with oral mucosal diseases than in healthy volunteers; furthermore, in patients with oral mucosal diseases, the concentration was significantly higher before treatment than after treatment.Öğe The favorable effects of vitamine e added on treatment of experimental acute organic phosphorus toxicity [Deneysel akut organik fosfor toksisitesi tedavisine eklenen e vitaminin olumlu etkileri](2011) Bayir A.; Yildiz M.; Kara H.; Köylü O.; Kocabaş R.; Ak A.Objectives: Oxidative stress by increased production of reactive oxygen species has been implicated in the toxicity of many pesticides. The tissue levels of ROS are one of the most important indicator of tissue injury. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of vitamin E treatment in acute organophosphate poisoning (AOP) on choline esterase (CE) and Malondialdehit (MDA) levels in the liver tissue and blood and to compare with antidote treatment. Methods: Twenty New Zaeland type rabbits were divided into randomly three groups as sham (n=8), pralidoxime (PAM)+atropine (n=6), and vitamin E (n=6). blood samples were taken from each test subjects to measure plasma CE, serum and erythrocyte MDA values before toxicity. 50 mg/kg 2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate were given to all subjects orogastrically. The PAM-atropine group were given 30 mg/kg IV bolus, then 15 mg/kg PAM and 0.05 mg/kg atropine IV every 4 hours. The vitamin E group received 250 mg/kg vitamin E single dose IM in addition to same atropine and PAM treatment. Blood samples were obtained from the all subjects in the 12th and 24th hours followed by the initiation of treatment. The liver tissue samples were obtained to evaluate in order to evaluate same parameters. The test subjects were sacrificed by high dose IV anesthesia. Results: The erythrocyte MDA of vitamin E group was significantly lower than PAM-atropine group (p=0.003). Liver tissue CE level of vitamin E group was considerably higher than PAM-atropine group (p<0.001). Liver tissue MDA of vitamin E group was significantly lower than PAMatropine group (p<0.001). Conclusions: Included in the treatment of acute AOF toxicity, vitamin E has a curative effect on both erythrocyte and liver tissue lipid peroxidation and tissue CE activity.Öğe Phenomenal self and dream self(Kure Iletisim Grubu A.S., 2017) Kara H.; Selvi Y.The concept of self is a complicated issue; however, a conceptualization of dream self even reflects a more complicated process. Various historical and contemporary approaches, which need reconciliation and refinement, exist toward the topic of the self; these approaches spread through a wide spectrum. On the one hand is the thought that self is fictional; on the other hand, self is considered a solid concept. Of these approaches, the phenomenological approach has its own unique place capturing the issue from a broader view. While this phenomenological view argues that self is the subject of the self’s experiences, it also emphasizes the accessibility of self through consciousness. A descriptive introspection might access the basic phenomenal characteristics of the self. The present article basically argues that there is a phenomenal self in dreams that can be accessed through consciousness and thus, dreams are basically personal experiences of the self. Research into the phenomenological similarities and differences between the awake and dreaming self might help to better understand subjectivity and consciousness. On the other hand, if there exists a phenomenal self in dreams, which can be accessed through consciousness psychological dream theories need a radical revision.Öğe The relation among to mortality rate, hospitalization period and inflammatory mediators in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease attack on admission to emergency department(Ondokuz Mayis Universitesi, 2015) Bayir A.; Buyukunaldi P.; Kiyici A.; Kara H.Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by a progressive and not completely reversible obstruction of the airways associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs to particles and noxious gases related to a systemic effect. Inflammatory processes are suggested to be involved in pathogenesis of COPD. The aim of the study was to investigate the relation among to the mortality rate, hospitalization period and inflammatory mediators of the patients with COPD attack on admission into the emergency department. A total of 87 subjects with COPD attack were contributed in this study. TNF-?, IL-6 and catalase were determined in addition to leucocyte count (WBC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP). There was no significant difference between the deceased and discharged patients in terms of WBC, ESR, CRP, IL-6, and TNF-?. However, mean catalase levels of discharged patients were significantly higher than the deceased patients (p<0.05). Significant correlations were observed between WBC and hospitalization period, and CRP and follow up period in the intensive care unit. We can suggest that catalase activities on admission into the emergency service were decreased in deceased patients who were in follow up in intensive care unit with COPD attack. High CRP and WBC levels were also related with the hospitalization period of patients with COPD attack. © 2015 OMU.Öğe Reversible myocarditis after spider bite(2013) Kara H.; Ak A.; Bayir A.; Avci A.Black widow spiders (Latrodectus tredecimguttatus) are poisonous spiders endemic in Turkey. Latrodectus bites may cause myocarditis with increased cardiac enzymes. We treated two men (aged 20 and 33 years) who had myocarditis after black spider bites with leucocytosis and elevated levels of troponin I, creatine kinase and creatine kinase-MB fraction. Both patients had normal results on an ECG, and one patient had abnormal echocardiography with minimal left ventricular wall movement disorder. Both patients were hospitalised in the intensive care unit and treated with intravenous fl uids, analgesics, spasmolytic drugs, tetanus prophylaxis and cardiac monitoring. The levels of troponin I, creatine kinase and creatine kinase-MB fraction improved, and the patients were discharged home on the third and fifth hospital day without complications. Myocarditis after a Latrodectus bite is rare, but may be associated with serious complications. Therefore, in regions endemic with Latrodectus spiders, prudent treatment of spider bites may include cardiac evaluation and monitoring. Copyright 2013 BMJ Publishing Group. Its crystal structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The maximum absorption wavelengths recorded by linear optical experiments are estimated in the UV region to be shorter than 450 nm, showing good optical transparency to the visible light. It may thus possess first hyperpolarizabilities with non-zero values for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. Ab-initio quantum chemical calculations of the electric dipole moments (?) and the first static hyperpolarizabilities (?) were carried out. The computational results suggest that the complex may indeed have microscopic NLO behavior with non-zero values. © 2006 Verlag der Zeitschrift für Naturforschung.Öğe Turkish version of Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ)(2007) Ağargün, Mehmet Yücel; Çilli, Ali Savaş; Boysan M.; Selvi Y.; Gulec M.; Kara H.The purpose of this study was to provide validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Morningness-Eeveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). The Turkish version of the scale was administered to the 171 healthy participants (87 men and 84 women) twice in different times. The internal consistency of the each question and total scores of the scale was examined by carrying out Cronbach's alpha statistic and Pearson correlation analysis. The test-retest reliability of the total MEQ scores was researched by applying dependent sample t-test and Pearson correlation analysis in two different application times. The reliability was satisfactory (Cronbach's alpha=0.81). Points of the questions were found significantly and positively correlated with the total point. There is not a significant change in two different application times. Internal consistency of the Turkish version was found high in the present study. The scale is adequate to distinguish "morning" and "evening" types in Turkish population.
