The Adaptive Reuse of Kirkuk Citadel
(SELCUK UNIV, 2017) Mokhtar, Mustafa; Korumaz, Mustafa
Knowledge and memory influence the interpretations of a built environment, implying particular expectations in regard to the built environments and their roles in a society. People and their culture constitute the spirits of a building and a space. Memory also can dominate many heritage users, individuals, social and political groups over many centuries. Memory and spirit of cultural heritage enriches cultural identity under the global development. The adaptive reuse of heritage buildings is valued for the contribution for social and environmental sustainability as well as retaining memory. The inherent value of cultural heritage components and their place within the community's memory helps to reinforce sense of place. In conservation sense identity, memory and the relationships of people give cultural significance to historical places. Evolution of the built environments bridges past and present to the future and embrace memory. However the cities as organisms are in a dilemma along with the loss of city memories and city spirits. These collective memories that bring spirits to a place play very important role and determine the cultural significance of places. The main contribution of this study is to emphasize the importance of adaptive reuse as a carrier of spirits to have a collective memory in order to sustain the development of a place. This article explores the relations between spirit and memory of a place by focusing of adaptive reuse project in Kirkuk citadel. Aim of this study is to question and evaluate restoration of Kirkuk Citadel in terms of urban identity and sense of place referring the early Kirkuk city and development of it. This paper also intends to put important guidelines for the future restoration projects of Kirkuk citadel - which is very urgently required - and high lights the importance of revitalizing this area, which is now the semi-dead heart of the city. The paper advocates policy makers is to increase the adaptive reuse policy as an integral tool of regeneration and sustainability policies in order not to lose collective memory.

Advanced procedure for documenting and assessment of Cultural Heritage: from Laser Scanning to Finite Element
(IOP PUBLISHING LTD, 2018) Tucci, Grazia; Bartoli, Gianni; Betti, Michele; Bonora, Valentina; Korumaz, Mustafa; Korumaz, Armagan Gulec
This paper discusses an approach for identification of historic buildings that combines Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) survey, Deviation Analysis (DA) and Finite Element (FE) numerical modelling. The methodology is presented through the application to an illustrative case study: an early medieval period brick minaret located in Aksaray (Turkey). Precise direction of inclination, leaning angle, local deviations from circular building shape, deflections from vertical planes, local curvatures and related maps were obtained with high accuracy by DA, based on detailed point cloud 3D mesh model. In addition, differently from traditional approaches in FE analysis, a method for direct transfer of high accuracy TLS based 3D model to FE structural analysis is introduced. The FE model is subsequently employed to interpret and verify structural health of the historic building.

Advantage of Digital Close Range Photogrammetry in Drawing of Muqarnas in Architecture
(2009) Yakar, Murat; Yılmaz, Hacı Murat; Güleç, Saadet Armağan; Korumaz, Mustafa
In this study, conventional method and digital close range photogrammetry is compared in sample study for measuring and drawing of muqarnas which is common in architecture. One of the most significant advantages of close range photogrammetry in documentation is giving opportunity to measure buildings or part of the buildings especially very high, very low, dangerous, not accessible or very detailed like muqarnas or damaged. It is a big facility to measure required measurement of the parts of the building from the photograph. Its another important thing in documentation that these data can be used in the future again and they can be shared with other users and they are easy to store in computer.

CULTURAL IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY TURKISH ARCHITECTURE CASE STUDY IN KONYA
(SELCUK UNIV, 2015) Canan, Fatih; Sayin, Selcuk; Korumaz, Mustafa
Today in many countries, new solutions and trends in architecture field to express cultural identity against the pressure of internationalism appear in different qualitative values. In the example of Turkey, even today, if the problem of the identity affirmation in architecture continues, in fact, the historical origin of this problem coincides with the last period of the Ottoman Empire and early Republican period. Since the 20s to today, we can see the efforts to reflect national and modern identity in architectural designs, especially in public buildings.. In this study, firstly, the relationship between architecture and identity will be examined. Then after, buildings reflecting identity trends designed by famous architects such as Sedat Hakki Eldem and Turgut Cansever from different periods in Turkey will be presented. The current architectural achievements in the generality of our country will be reviewed by a critical perspective. The city of Konya will be chosen for the special study areas. These buildings are banks, administrative and culture buildings. Trend analysis of identities in the current architectural achievements will be realized taking into account the following criteria: the metaphor, interpretation - synthesis and direct imitation. The architectural elements belonging to the Seljuk Empire that Konya was the capital between 11 th and 13 th century, will be frequently present in the selected samples. In conclusion, the defended ideas will be the following: New products of art and architecture should always be designed with an original and innovative approach. The use of direct imitation in new architectural achievements to establishing a link with the past does not always positive effect on architectural quality. The historic architectural elements used in order to create an identity in modern architecture should be interpreted with caution.

An integrated Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS), Deviation Analysis (DA) and Finite Element (FE) approach for health assessment of historical structures. A minaret case study
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2017) Korumaz, Mustafa; Betti, Michele; Conti, Alessandro; Tucci, Grazia; Bartoli, Gianni; Bonora, Valentina; Korumaz, Armagan Guelec
This paper presents a multi-disciplinary approach for identification of historic buildings structural health with combination of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) survey, Deviation Analysis (DA) and Finite Element (FE) numerical modelling. The proposed methodology was discussed through the application to an illustrative case study: an early medieval period brick minaret (Egri Minaret) located in Aksaray (central Turkey). After standing upright for several centuries, the minaret has developed tilt, and today the structure is supported with steel cables. Precise direction of inclination, leaning angle, local deviations from circular building shape, deflections from vertical planes, local curvatures and related maps were obtained with high accuracy by DA, based on detailed point cloud 3D mesh model. Differently from traditional approaches in FE analysis, the paper discusses a method for direct transfer of high accuracy TLS based 31) model to FE structural analysis software, subsequently employed to interpret and verify structural health of the historic building. Through the discussion of the results, it can be considered that the integration of these different techniques (being the whole process non-destructive, effective and expeditious for surface analysis) is a promising methodology for health assessment and analysis of historic constructions.

Opportunities of geometric documentation of historic buildings with terrestrial laser scanner, examples from Aksaray/Turkey
(Selcuk University Faculty of Architecture, 2018-12-28) Korumaz, S. Armağan Güleç; Tucci, Grazia; Korumaz, Mustafa; Bonara, Valentina
Detailed and accurate measurements can be done by using laser scanning technology compared to conventional methods in documentation of cultural heritage. Accuracy of measured data directly affects the protection of historical buildings and decision-making process. By processing laser scanning data, multipurpose 3d models can be obtained and all work and results can be shared via internet. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the building can be made with this data and it can be transferred to all related engineering and archeological fields. Despite the advantages of this technology, it has not been used widely yet in production of architectural projects. High cost of equipment and data processing software have been seen as main obstacles for widespread using of this technology. As well as, lack of integration of this topic into architectural education and less number of researcher studying in this field restrict the use of laser scanner. In this paper, evaluations were made in order to define the possibilities by using laser scanner technologies in process of restoration projects of which number is getting increased in last decades in Turkey. Positive and negative aspects of technology observed in survey process were given with a case study, a small traditional house in province of Aksaray and surroundings.

Reproduction of Turkish Traditional Wall-Painting Using Close Range Photogrammetry, a Case Study in Gaziantep
(Copernicus Gesellschaft Mbh, 2010) Korumaz, Mustafa; Korumaz, Armağan Güleç
Wall-paintings are widespread used decorative elements in traditional Turkish architecture. They reflect cultural situation of the period they were made and enrich indoor space with their color, pattern and their history in paintings that is why they should be conserved. In restoration process of historical buildings, these indoor space elements should be provisionally documented and researched. As results of these researches structural condition of the paintings are made and according to these results intervention decisions are produced in decision making process. In this process, while some pictures are not being touched because of being in good condition, some pictures need to be restored. As result of deformation on the walls and pictures, some pictures need to be reproduced. In this study, photogrammetric researches and documentation of some wall-paintings of Gaziantep will be made with photometric techniques. Besides, scope of this study to get documentation with their original color and pattern by using laser scanner and to get orhophoto of these wall-paintings. The importance of orthophotos will be mentioned for reproducing the wall-painting on its original place or restoring them. In this study, importance of using photogrammetric methods in documentation of wall-painting as an architectural documentation will be highlighted.

Vision Evaluation of the Students in Architecture About Sustainable Architecture in a Local Context in Konya / Turkey
(2006) Canan, Fatih; Korumaz, Mustafa; Güleç, Saadet Armağan
In this research it was tried to explore at which point the students in architecture have a sustainable vision in a local context in Turkey. The intermediate position of the young students between the school and the professional life that they will discover was used for establishing interrogations concerning with the education of architecture and the current practices. The results obtained from an investigation carried out within the school showed us that the students have a rather passive intention in the adoption of the sustainable values, whether that is at the school or for the future professional life. That is due in majority to the appreciations towards the exemplary shown architectural applications, with the existing dominant thoughts, the lacks of local example sustainable projects and with the program of architectural education which is still traditionally modernistic.
