Initiated CVD of Tertiary Amine-Containing Glycidyl Methacrylate Copolymer Thin Films for Low Temperature Aqueous Chemical Functionalization
(WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH, 2014) Sariipek, Fatma; Karaman, Mustafa
This manuscript reports on the synthesis of copolymer films of glycidyl methacrylate with diethylaminoethyl methacrylate by initiated (i)CVD. The purpose of the incorporation of tertiary amine functionality in the copolymer film is to accelerate the rate of the nucleophilic ring-opening reaction of the epoxide group under benign conditions. It is found that tertiary amine functionality in the poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) film significantly increases the rate and degree of the ring-opening reactions. After 2 h of reaction at room temperature, 72% of the epoxy groups are consumed, while the conversion under similar conditions is negligible for the PGMA film.

Template assisted synthesis of photocatalytic titanium dioxide nanotubes by hot filament chemical vapor deposition method
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2013) Karaman, Mustafa; Sariipek, Fatma; Koysuren, Ozcan; Yildiz, H. Bekir
Titanium dioxide thin films were deposited conformally over electrospun polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) fibers by hot filament chemical vapor deposition method. Deposition rates were observed to be very high to allow for rapid coatings. Thermal annealing of as deposited materials leads the clean decomposition of the polymeric inner layer and formation of randomly distributed anatase TiO2 nanotubes. Nanotubular TiO2 structure was clearly identified by SEM and that structure is ideal for good photocatalytic activity because of its high surface area per unit volume ratio. FTIR and XPS results show the formation of stoichiometric TiO2, and the crystalline form of the final nanotubes was found to be anatase (1 0 1) after XRD analysis. High photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes under UV irradiation was observed with an apparent rate constant of 0.74 h(-1) for methyl orange decomposition. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Vapor deposition of blanket polymeric nanocoatings on porous substrates for the facile preparation of thin film composite membranes
(PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 2016) Sariipek, Fatma; Akin, Ilker; Arslan, Gulsin; Karaman, Mustafa
In this study a thin film composite (TFC) membrane was fabricated using initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-diethylamino ethyl methacrylate) thin films on porous fabric membrane supports. iCVD allowed very high deposition rates (50 nm min(-1)) at low substrate temperatures. SEM analysis confirmed that iCVD forms a defect-free blanket type coating over the support surface. The resultant TFC membrane was used for the selectively facilitated transport of Cr(VI) with a maximum transport amount of 81.25% in aqueous medium. The transport efficiency of the TFC membrane was reproducible and it could be efficiently used in the long-term separation processes. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
