| dc.description.abstract | Bu çalışmada, 19. yüzyıl Alman yazarı Ida von Hahn-Hahn’ın “Orientalische Briefe” ve 18. yüzyıl İngiliz yazarı Lady Mary Montagu’nun “Briefe aus dem Orient” adlı eserlerinde Doğu ülkeleri diye tabir edilen ülkelere -özellikle Türkiye’ye- yaptıkları geziler esnasında arkadaş ve akrabalarına yazdıkları mektuplar ele alınarak, her iki yazarın da “Doğu” ile karşılaşmaları ve bu karşılaşmayı nasıl dile getirdikleri; Doğu ile karşılaşmada yabancılık unsurlarının hangi kültürel, sosyal, politik veya ekonomik yapılar tarafından belirlendiği karşılaştırmalı ve Cultural Studies yöntemleriyle incelenmiştir. Mektuplar günce niteliğinde olup, yabancı olarak algılanan kültürde yazarların yaşadıkları yabancılığı dilsel, kültürel, dinsel, sosyal, politik ve psikolojik bakımdan anlama güçlüklerini de dile getirmektedir. “Doğu” tüm anlaşılamayan ve anlaşılan kültürel örüntüleriyle “Batı”ya mektuplar yoluyla aktarılmakta, hayranlık duyulan özellikleri ve Batı kültüründe bulunmayan yapıları, ritüelleri, performansları ve inançları ile ilginç, olağanüstü ve olağan dışı hale getirilmektedir. Bu arada bir etnolog ya da etnograf gibi yazan bu iki yazarın Doğu’yu değerlendirmedeki bakış açıları ve anlatım tutumları ise Avrupa merkezli bir özellik göstermektedir. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | The aim in this study is to analyze the letters of the 19. Century German author Ida von Hahn-Hahn “Orientalische Briefe” and the letters of the 18. Century German author Lady Mary Montagu “Briefe aus dem Orient”, which they wrote when they were traveling throughout the Eastern countries, especially Turkey. These letters were written to send to their friends and relatives. In this study, we investigate how the authors confront with the East and how they express these confrontations. Another subject which was to explain how cultural, social, political or economic structures determine strangeness was investigated through contrastive and cultural studies methods. The letters having the quality of a diary express the authors’ strangeness by indicating the difficulties they encountered in understanding the different cultures in linguistic, cultural, religious, social, political, and psychological terms. The East with its incomprehensible and comprehensible cultural structures was transferred to the West in these letters. It’s features, which fascinate people, and the structures, rituals, performances and beliefs, which do not exist in the Western culture, were transferred as something extraordinary or unusual. Moreover, as they wrote like ethnologists or ethnographers, the authors’ point of view in analyzing the East and their attitudes in narrating reflect European centric features. | en_US |
